Texas\' First Historic District of 19th-Century European Mansions
The King William Historic District is one of the most architecturally breathtaking, historically preserved, and romantic residential enclaves in the United States. Situated immediately south of Downtown San Antonio along a gentle bend of the San Antonio River, King William was settled in the mid-19th century by prosperous German immigrant merchants, bankers, and industrialists.
Affectionately named in honor of King Wilhelm I of Prussia, the neighborhood earned the 19th-century nickname 'Sauerkraut Bend' due to its affluent German community. Shaded by majestic pecan and live oak trees, wide residential boulevards showcase magnificent Greek Revival, Victorian Gothic, Italianate, and Queen Anne mansions featuring intricate limestone masonry and wrought-iron balconies.
As the very first designated historic district in Texas (1968), King William combines serene residential elegance with living history, anchored by iconic landmarks like Villa Finale, the Steves Homestead, and the historic Guenther House.

From 1850s \'Sauerkraut Bend\' to Texas Preservation Pioneer
Originally part of Mission San Antonio de Valero\'s agricultural farmland, the land was subdivided in the 1850s. Prominent German immigrant pioneers—including flour miller Carl Hilmar Guenther, merchant Edward Steves, and banker George Kalteyer—built grand estates reflecting European architectural splendor.
In 1968, thanks to grassroots efforts led by civic preservationist Walter Mathis, King William became the first designated historic district in Texas. Mathis restored multiple historic mansions, including Villa Finale, which he later bequeathed to the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
