San Antonio's Prestigious Island City of Fine Arts, Quaint Charm & Luxury
Alamo Heights is universally recognized as the most prestigious, storied, and affluent enclave in the San Antonio metropolitan area. Officially incorporated as an independent municipality in 1922, Alamo Heights is an 'island city' completely surrounded by San Antonio, located roughly five miles directly north of Downtown.
Renowned for its top-ranked Alamo Heights Independent School District, the city features winding, canopy-shaded streets lined with stately mid-century estates, Spanish Colonial Revival villas, and charming stone cottages. The cultural crown jewel of the community is The McNay Art Museum—the first modern art museum in Texas—set within a breathtaking 24-room Spanish Colonial Revival mansion on 25 acres of manicured sculpture gardens.
Along the bustling Broadway commercial corridor and at the historic Alamo Quarry Market—where historic 1908 cement plant smokestacks rise above premier retail and golf—Alamo Heights combines small-town community warmth with cosmopolitan elegance.

From 19th-Century Cattle Ranch to Texas\' Most Prestigious Enclave
In the 1850s, the land was acquired by noted Texas Ranger and rancher Charles Anderson, who built a classic stone homestead. In the 1890s, the Alamo Heights Land and Improvement Company began developing the picturesque rolling hills into an exclusive residential retreat.
In 1922, when San Antonio sought to annex the area, visionary residents voted to incorporate as an independent municipality, protecting their independent schools, zoning, and police services. In 1954, oil heiress Marion Koogler McNay bequeathed her estate and modern art collection to create The McNay Art Museum.
